Katsuhiro Otomo’s AKIRA is getting a new anime project

Japanese manga creator Katsuhiro Otomo announced that Sunrise Inc. is producing a new anime project based of his classic manga series, AKIRA.

The announcement was made on Thursday during his panel at this year’s Anime Expo in Los Angeles.

The new anime project is reportedly aims to incorporate all the story of the original manga series. There are no more details announced aside from a short teaser presented by Sunrise President and CEO Makoto Asanuma.

Apart from the new project, Otomo also announced the upcoming release of a 4K remaster of his original 1988 anime film. The remaster is set to release in Japan on April 24, 2020.

AKIRA is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Katsuhiro Otomo. It was originally serialized in Kodansha’s Young Magazine from 1982 until 1990.

The series has inspired an animated film of the same name in 1988. It is also getting live-action film adaptation, which is set to release in 2021.
