Hana Yori Dango is based on a Japanese shojo manga series written by Yoko Kamio. It tells the story of Makino Tsukushi, a hardworking school girl who want to quietly graduate from Eitoku Academy, a prestigious academy populated by children from rich, high-society. That is until she captures the interest of four rich, popular and handsome guys collectively known as Flower 4 or F4, in short.

The manga has been adapted to an anime series and film in 1996 and 1997, respectively. There has also been a Japanese live-action film and television special released in 1995 and 2008.

Several countries have produced their local version of the series like Taiwan (Meteor Garden), Japan (Hana Yori Dango) and South Korea (Boys Over Flowers).
